People think they can consume them in unlimited quantities when someone labels specific foods as super and healthy. Second thing is that superfood is not a scientific term and nor use by the scientist.

So what is an ideal food

Many Research shows that the ideal diet is one which is widely plants based on a large variety of vegetables, fruits, healthful animal products (milk, meat, fish, cheese etc) and whole grains. A balanced diet is an ideal diet or food, in which equal and proper amount of minerals, vitamins, proteins, fat, carbohydrates include. Yoga for winter | Asana & Pranayama

Performing Yogic activities in cold season have a lot of plus points. If you perform the correct poses that help you to warm up your body and mobilize your joints, strengthen your chest.   • Body warm up is very important, before performing yogic activities; start your yoga session by body warm-up exercise like Spot jogging, squatting, Trikonasana, Tadasana etc. In winters do more body warm-up exercise in comparison to summer.
  • Make a 3 to 5 hours gap between your meal and Yoga Practice.
  • You have to take deep and controlled breathing during Yogic activities.
  • Focusing on your inhale and exhale in between any Asana.
  • Note that, in the winter season, exhale little longer than your inhale time.
  • Keep in mind, when you inhale it represents upwards movement and breathe out is the twist or downwards.
  • Do complete exercise, means if you perform any Asana from your right/ or left side then also perform the same process with your alternate side of your body.
  • During performing any Asana, pay attention to your breathing and on your shoulders movement also.
  • Take more dry fruits in the winter season and for your child give golden milk (Turmeric mix milk) in the morning or before going to bed. This will make your body ready for winters.
  • Instead of having Tea, drink the mixture of Tulsi, Ginger, Black pepper & cloves and you can also add some salt or sugar to this mixture. This is the best antioxidants helps you to fight against the general disease.

This is the Best pose for starting your yoga session. It includes 12 steps and it is power packed Asana. Perform this Pose 3 to 6 times especially with mantras in winter. This Posture produces the ample heat to warm your body. So, this is the important Asana, in cold weather. But in summer perform this Asana only 1 to 2 times. If you spent some time performing this Asana daily; this can help to kick out stress, anxiety, and depression from our Mind and it increases the flexibility of our body and strength also. This invigorating backbend was named such because Bhujangasana reflects the posture of a cobra that has its hood raised.

If you perform Bhujangasana comfortably then try to attempt Purna Bhujangasana (Full cobra pose) full cobra pose comes under the Advanced level; so be careful in attempting this pose.

Bow pose is also very important Asana for winter. Dhanurasana raises both halves of the body at once, mixing the movements of the Cobra and Locust, and countering the Plough and the Forward Bend, same as like an archer stringing a bow. In this, you use your hands and arms to pull your trunk and legs up together to form a curve. It tones back muscles and maintains the elasticity of spine, improving posture and increasing vitality. People who are master in Dhanurasana perform Purna Dhanurasana after this.

When you perform this Asana try to hold some time in Sarvangasana then go for Halasana. Sarvangasana is the important step for Halasana. By this, you Cover two Asana in one (Sarvangasana + Halasana). But keep focusing on your inhalation & Exhalation. Hold your breath minimum 5 cycles of breath in both Sarvangasana and in Halasana also.

  • Setu Bandha Sarvangasana

If you want variations, then go for Setu Bandha Sarvangasana after completing Halasana. But do this Asana in a correct way take help from your trainer if you are uncomfortable.

While performing this posture, push yourself up and try to maintain your hips at an angle of 90 degrees over your knees. Ustrasana Stretches the anterior muscles of the body and improves the flexibility of your spine and strengthens it.

This pose improves your digestion and beneficial in the lower back problem. It is useful as an initial practice for back bending asana. After discharging the pose go to child pose and take some rest and repeat the steps for 3 to 5 times.

This posture is good for your abdomen region to hold your breath during the final stage as much as you can.

In this Asana you have to keep your body parallel to the floor and which is supported by your toes and palms with elbows at a right angle but not touching the floor. Chaturanga Dandasana looks much like a push-up pose, but with the hands very low (simply over the pelvis), and the elbows kept in at the edges of the body.

It is the best exercise for your wrists and also beneficial for your lower back. This pose stretches your lower back muscles along with shoulders and chest also. This is very good posture for toning your abdominal muscles. Urdhva Mukha Svanasana is useful in depression, sciatica, and fatigue.

Here is another awesome Asana, for warming your body. Note that when you are in final pose hold your breaths for 30to 60 seconds. If you feel difficulty during breath retention then continue this pose with deep and control breathing.

Breathing Exercise for winters (Pranayama)

So, these are the best Pranayama for chilled winters. Avoid Sheetali, Sheetkaari & Chandra Bhedana Pranayama.

But the inquiry is how much we are cognizant of it? How much we are cognizant of our own behaviors and emotions and the causes for these? What is this mind which actually has generated thus much of command over us? Most importantly, why it has taken so much of command over us?

What is the mind?

The nature of the brain and the nature of its components have been stirring up the minds of people for a long time. Various elucidations have been made and then far to see it. Moving further from the philosophical discussions mind is now also the theatrical role of the scientific subject area to come up or explore the correlation between intellect and the physical structure. It is really hard to get across a definite conclusion over mind, its nature, constituents and functions.

A long tradition of inquiries in philosophies, faith, psychology and cognitive science has sought to develop and understanding of what a mind is and what its distinguishing attributes are. Different currents of knowledge define or explain the idea in different ways based on its nature, characteristics and uses. According to many of the hard core neuroscientists mind is the locution of the action of the brain cells. According to psychologists it is the sum total of all the cognitive functions that are carried out by the wakeful mind. According to yoga lore, mind is aggregate of thoughts. Thoughts are of two categories – manifest mind and un-manifest mind. Manifest mind is cognizable as wakeful and dream states and un-manifest is dormant as in deep sleep. Out thinking apparatus is the mind.

East and West ideology:

The way mind is being strained to look at or to explore in the west differs from the dogma of the east. The whole literature on the subject in the west gives diverse point of views conflicting with each other. Often the point of difference centers round the relation between mind and body. Whereas in the East, Indian philosophers identify the mind as something distinct from the Atman or the self and it has associated with the intelligence. Since it is subtle in nature, it is not gross matter.

In the west we find an emphasis on physical comfort. When the weather is too warm the westerner suffers without something to chill him and when it is too cold, he is miserable without warmth from artificial heat. But the masters of India teach a different philosophy. They say that sensitivity to heat and cold, pleasure and pain, accrues from the delusive suggestions of the senses and man’s habit of catering to sensations. The great ones do not suggest the man discipline himself to the point of doing injury to his system rather, they advise that when cold or heat is affected one should free himself mentally from the sensation at the same time seeking a remedy for the condition.

We are mind dependent:

Aside from the textual knowledge, what matters is our experiences. We frequently conceive of ourselves, analyse ourselves, in a sense try to distinguish ourselves. Sometimes we are happy, sometimes we are sad. Sometimes we lack in confidence and sometimes we are high on it. This whole activity of our emotions is governed by our own mind. Most of the time we are under the influence of our own psyche. We conduct as our mind wish us to do. But what is the rationality we are being slavish to it?

One important thing here to note is that the mind is a different entity from us, we are not mind and mind is not we. In that case we must be something different from our psyche. As seen and taught by Indian masters, we are pure awareness. Consciousness is our original identity and calmness is our basic nature. As we forgot this very fact of our being, we are unable to moderate our emotions. As a result varieties of problems are now being fronted by the society.

For example: the skin’s surface does not feel touch sensation, they are experienced in the brain. One cannot taste, touch, smell, hear, or see except through the mind. We seem to experience taste on the tongue, but it is actually the brain that registers flavour. Likewise, when some part of the body suffers, the annoyance is really in the mind, not in the body function. We hold two instruments of perceiving pain: the nerves and the grey matter of the mind. But we perceive only if the mind allows a link between them. Unless the mind says there is pain, there is no pain. This is the marvellous discovery of India’s great masters.

From this attitude of slavish response to mind the troubles start. We become emotionally upset. As a consequence of disturbance we become unable to balance or stabilize our mind. We fail to bring the control back over the mind. This dependency over mind makes us to become really hyper-reactive to every situation being confronted. These unhealthy reactions affect badly our physical, mental, emotional and societal wellness. So it is very important to sustain and improve our health by being in a state of equanimity.

Yoga: science of transcending the mind

Yoga plays a very important role here. It teaches the systematic steps to take mastery over the mind and to direct it in a proper way and become released. The practice of yoga enables an individual to move towards betterment of his health by making him self-disciplined.

Meaning And Definition of Yoga

What does yoga mean?

It is better to first understand the literal meaning of any subject or topic so that the basic understanding of the subject is made clear, so as yoga. The literal meaning of yoga is hidden in its Sanskrit root yuj. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj which has three meanings:

  • Yujir yoge: meaning to join

The first meaning of yoga goes with the understanding of joining the individual consciousness jivatma with the ultimate consciousness paramatma.

According to highest conception of Indian philosophy of which yoga is an integral part, jivatma is a component or partial expression of the Supreme Soul or Paramatma. Although two are the same and indivisible both are separated subjectively and the jivatma undergoes the evolutionary cycle in the manifested universe, to become united again with Him. So the discipline through which the union is attained is yoga.

  • Yuj samadhou: meaning Samadhi

The second meaning describes yoga as Samadhi itself. Maharishi Vyasa has defined yoga as Samadhi in Vyasa bhashya. Samadhi is a state where nothing exists except awareness. Samadhi is explained in detail in a different section ‘samdhi’.

  • Yuj samyamne: meaning to control

The third meaning considers yoga is to have control. Control of what? Control of senses. It describes yoga as to have control (Sanyam) over senses.

From the above explanation it is clear that yoga is not merely about physical movements and it not only includes meditation and other technique but it is the path which leads us towards the truth, the ultimate reality. The different definitions of yoga gives a better understanding of what yoga is? And what it deals with.

Definitions of yoga:

There are many scriptures which define yoga in various manner. One of those scriptures is ‘Paatanjal Yogasutra’, the authorship of which belongs to Maharishi Patanjali. Patanjali defines yoga in his text as:

Yogas citta-vritti-nirodhah

                                                                                                     – Yogsutra (1/2)

Yoga is the inhibition of modification of mind.

Here the word Chitta doesn’t literally means the mind but in general sense it is considered as mind. Chitta is fundamentally of the nature or consciousness which is immaterial but affected by matter. In fact, it may be called a product of both, consciousness and matter, the presence of the both being necessary for its functioning. It is like an intangible screen which enables the light of consciousness to be projected in the manifested world. But the real secret of its essential nature lies buried in the origin of the manifested universe and can be known only on attaining enlightenment.

The word Vritti is derived from the Sanskrit root Vrit which means ‘to exist’. So vrtti is a way of existing. In considering the ways in which a thing exists we may consider its modifications, states, activities or its functions. So vrttis are modification of chitta or mind. Sage Patanjali has explained five vrttis, the fundamental states or types of modifications in which the mind can exist. So the sutra defines yoga as the discipline through which modifications of mind are inhibited.


Another important scripture which deals with the yoga is Shrimadbhagavdgita. Bhagavdgita presents a very vast explanation on yoga. In fact the whole of the Geeta deals with the yoga. Bahgavadgeeta is basically the talk between of Lord Krishna to his disciple, also a friend Arjuna in between the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

When Arjuna was distracted from his Dharma Lord Krishna taught him about what Dharma actually is? And he taught him about Jnanyoga, Karmayoga, Bhaktiyoga and Rajayoga to make Arjuna to understand about Dharma.

Yoga as skill in action:

In his teachings Lord Shri Krishna defines yoga as:

                                     Yogah karmasu kaushalam

                                                                                  – Bhagavadgeeta (2/50)

Yoga is skill in action.

            Actions done with expectation of its reward bring bondage. If the action is done without any thirst for reward, one get purification of heart and ultimately knowledge of the Self. In Geeta Lord Krishna very well that how we can practice yoga while performing action. Our actions i.e. karma can also be done in yogic way. Which is called Karmayoga.

In today’s scenario the Karmayoga is the best way of practicing yoga because when people are advised to practice yogasana and pranyamas etc the only reason they have to give is lack of time. Ultimately yoga is practiced to give happiness and satisfaction then why should not we get this by doing our routine work?

Lord Krishna says that skill in action is also yoga. If we observe when we help someone for any reason then it gives us happiness that cannot be explained we feel a sort of satisfaction. But when we are said or ordered to get some work done then after doing that we do not feel that kind of satisfaction which we feel while serving others because there is no expectation or thought of reward or of praise in serving i.e. karmayoga.

Whatever kind of work we are doing to earn our livelihood we must do that with a sense of service. So that we maintain promptness in our work because when we think it is a service then a sense of responsibility develops within us towards society and our egocentric attitude slowly starts to diminish thereby developing purity inside which leads us to the ultimate reality.

As discussed earlier yoga is not a goal in itself rather it is a medium to achieve the goal.

What is that goal of yoga?

The goal is to become one with the Almighty.

When it is possible to realize that reality?

It is when we get free from bondages.

Why bondages occur?

They occur because of our karma. Because our karmas create sankaras (impressions) in our

chitta we get bonded with the evolutionary cycle of the world.

Then how we can get rid of these sanskaras?

It is possible only through karmayoga.

Because we are not expecting any reward for karma, we perform karma as our duty and not to get any reward, they will not create any sankaras. Which leads us slowly to the ultimate reality.

 Yoga as stability of mind:

 Lord Shri Krishna says:

                                                    Samatvam yoga uchyate

                                                                                     – Bhagavdgeeta (2/48)

  Evenness of mind is called yoga.

 Here Lord Krishna tell Arjuna to perform action with the evenness of mind without bothering about victory and defeat, and this evenness of mind is nothing but yoga. And that is what all yoga is about. It is nothing but to concentrate the mind having control over all your senses.

The capacity to take decisions in critical situations is only possible with the evenness of mind. When the mind is disturbed then naturally one will not able to concentrate. It is not only about taking decisions, rather it is all about to get the ability to analyze every situation in every possible way, it is to stay firm with your decision even in drastic situations, to be able to know what is right and what is wrong. The ‘samatva’ state of mind helps you to know or realize what your ‘Dharma’ (righteous duty) should be in a particular situation. This is what the problem Arjuna was suffering with in the middle of the battlefield.

Seeing his own elders, his gurus, his brothers in front of him who are ready to fight with him Arjuna get distracted from his Dharma because he drops his bow as he don’t wanted to kill his own dear one’s. This only behavior or emotional state of Arjuna explains the results of unstable mind. An unstable mind cannot judge right and wrong. With an unstable mind one cannot analyze a situation thoroughly and act accordingly.

That is the reason Lord Krishna explain Arjuna about the ‘samatva bhaava’. Lord Krishna made Arjuna to understand his duty being a ‘Kshatriya’ (warrior). He advices Arjuna to fight, not to defeat or to kill them, but it is his duty (Dharma) fight with them.

This was not only the reason why Lord Krishna explains all about this. With the ‘samatva bhaava’ one can understand about his duties but why this is regarded as yoga. As explained before yoga is the way to salvation.

How salvation is attained?

When sanskaras of karmas or actions are nullified.

How the sanskaras can be nullified?

It can be done through karma only.

Then what kind of karma we should do to attain this?

Karmas should be performed considering them as our duty and not to get any reward.

How it is possible to perform karma in that manner?

It is possible with the evenness of mind.

When the karmas are done with the equanimity of mind then those karmas do not create any sanskaras which is the path to the salvation. At grosser level is the path to lead a happy and satisfied life.
